Honda’s latest 2.2 i-DTEC diesel engine is, predictably, state of the art and can power the Accord up to surprisingly high speeds while returning nearly 50mpg. If the styling of the new Honda Civic doesn’t appeal, or the indecently rapid Type R is a bit too frantic, there’s a more conservatively-styled 1.4/electric Civic Hybrid on offer. The CR-V is a capable if slightly bland SUV, while the three-abreast six-seat FR-V is a quirky family choice. The £36k Legend 3.5 V6 might not tempt too many BMW owners away from their 5-Series but the rev-happy S2000 roadster can still blow up a few skirts at £28k. Whichever Honda car you buy, you can bet it’ll still be running long after the last lights have been switched off.
