The £14k Tucson is a worthy SUV, and the Santa Fe 2.2 CRTD is a big, well-built 7-seater for under £23k, but the really exciting new Hyundai model names begin with an ‘i’. Boasting the longest wheelbase in the city car class, the sparky i10 city car will seat five, while the i30 is a strong Focus-challenger with super road manners and all the kit you could want at under £11k for the best-value 1.4 Comfort. Most recent launch is the Getz-replacing i20, a Fiesta-buster with three petrol engines from 1.2 to 1.6 and two diesels. For big families, the enormous but surprisingly driveable 2.5-litre diesel i800 MPV accommodates eight – plus, crucially, their luggage – with room to spare. And at less than £20k it considerably undercuts the only real competitor, the Volkswagen Caravelle. Unsold stocks of previous generation Hyundai cars like the Getz, Accent, Matrix, Hyundai Coupé SIII, Sonata and the Grandeur 3.3 V6 – possibly the rarest car on UK roads – bloat the range, but even these old models can look good in the warm glow of a 5-year warranty for new Hyundai’s.
