Although it’s getting on a bit now, the Mazda 5 MPV has many fans because of its sliding-door practicality and fine build. The CX-7 ‘crossover’ 4x4 has a usefully high driving position and a 2.3 turbo, giving it an 8-second 0-60 time, but the most well-rounded car in the range is the Mazda 6, a Mondeo-challenger that comes in hatch, saloon or estate formats, all of them excellent. Defying the years are Mazda’s sports cars, the MX-5 and the RX-8. In either steel-roofed CC or ragtop Open formats, the MX-5 is arguably the perfect sub-£20k sportster, delivering old-fashioned driving fun for little outlay. Running costs are more prohibitive on the RX-8 coupé, but that doesn’t detract from the driving experience, which is unique. Not just because of its surprisingly practical 2+2 door arrangement, but also because it’s the only rotary-engined car in production. With Bilstein dampers, the new Mazda R3 RX-8 handles brilliantly and goes like stink.
