At the other end of the scale is the Mercedes S-Class. You can pay up to £149k for the thunderously quick S65L AMG, but the top-value contender for the unofficial title of ‘world’s best car’ is the most affordable S-Class model, the wonderfully accomplished S320 CDI. Confusion about the B-Class’s role has kept it off the radar of most British buyers, but the Mercedes C-Class has evolved well, with a 45mpg C180 Blue EFFICIENCY model starting at around £23k. Both the C-Class and the supremely effective Mercedes E-Class (prices from £28k) are especially buyable in 220 CDI Estate format. Still cutting a highly individual dash on UK roads is the £46k Mercedes CLS coupé, again best to buy it in 320 CDI guise, while the 6-seat version of the R-Class and the GL 4x4 provide huge space and ability for the well-heeled family. The M-Class, once poorly built in the USA, is now a much better proposition: technology-rich, it has real off-road ability. The SL500 sports (£77k) is a classy but massively fast two-seater that’s perfect for low-profile thrill-seekers.
