Unlike the original, the new Mini is no budget buy: the entry level 1.4 Mini One starts at under £12k, but you can pay a whopping £21k for the John Cooper Works. On the upside, the 1.6 diesel (only available in Mini Cooper trim) is one of the most economical cars on the road, arguably offering the automotive world’s best compromise between cost-saving and enjoyment. The Clubman is the designer’s favourite with its ‘extra’ side door – unfortunately on the wrong side of the car for British owners. The Convertible is unbearably chic and, like all BMW Minis, as well made as you’d expect, but rearward vision and luggage space are both decidedly average. That’s the price of fame. Not that you’ll care when you’re sitting proudly behind the wheel.
