Those of a delicate nervous disposition might avoid the lurid Mégane R26R, but if you can get your head around the styling you’ll love its A-roads ability. Back in High St Anytown, the Renault Clio is a match for any supermini. If just under £10k for the 1.2 seems a bit steep, you can still buy the old Clio for £8k, the same price as the reintroduced Twingo. Early tests of the New Mégane show it to be a serious threat to the VW Golf in both build and drive quality. The Renault Modus has faded from view a little lately but its great functionality makes it a good buy at less than £9k. Laguna is a very refined and cheap to run family saloon, and the new Coupé impresses from certain angles. For load carrying there’s the versatile Scenic (£14k), the three-row Grand Scenic (£15k) and the comfortable but ageing Espace (£19k). Or, for a left-field choice, the 4x4 Koleos soft-roader (£18k). With no new Renault car starting at more than £20k, and a good spread of low-cost diesel engines, it’s not hard to find good value in the Régie’s range.
